2008 Major League Baseball season

The MLB 2008 season began on 25 March 2008 with an opening match between defending champion Boston Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics in Tokyo, Japan and ended on 29 October 2008 with the completion of Game 5 of the 2008 World Series in Philadelphia.

At the beginning of the season were 30 teams in Major League Baseball, with each team played 162 games during the regular season. An exception to this is the Chicago White Sox and the Minnesota Twins, the vorwiesen the identical result after 162 games, and therefore had to deny a play. Champions at season's end were the Philadelphia Phillies with a 4-1 victory in the World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The MLB All- Star Game took place on July 15 at Yankee Stadium in New York City. Here, the selection of the American League won after 15 innings 4-3 against the National League.

Division Series

From 1 October to 6 October 2008, the four duels in the American League Division Series and the National League Division Series were held. Here, the Anaheim Angels and the Tampa Bay Rays were able to secure qualification for the American League Championship Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies reached the National League Championship Series.

ALDS

The American League Division Series, the first round of playoffs in the American League, launched on October 1 and ended on October 6, 2008. Brought in with the wildcard scheme in the play-offs Boston Red Sox defeated the favored Anaheim Angels 3-1, the Tampa Bay Rays also won 3-1 against the Chicago White Sox. From 9 October to 19 October 2008, the participants were determined for the World Series in both the Championship Series. The title of the American League, the Tampa Bay Rays won in seven games. The Philadelphia Phillies were confident champion of the National League.

ALCS

The American League Championship Series, the second round of the playoffs in the American League, launched on October 10 and ended on 19 October 2008. The Best Of -Seven series went over the entire number of games. The Tampa Bay Rays led 3-1 after four games already, but the Boston Red Sox could after the home win in Game 5 and Game 6 in Tampa decide for themselves. Ultimately, Tampa Bay could but prevail in Game 7 on home soil. For the series MVP Matt Garza, Rays pitcher has been selected. For the Rays, it was the first participation in the ALCS in franchise history.

NLCS

The National League Championship Series, the second round of the playoffs in the National League, started on 9 October and ended on 15 October 2008. Winner of the best-of -seven series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies were the because of their much better regular season, favored Phillies. The team from Philadelphia was able to claim first place with 4-1 wins and thereby secure the first participation in a World Series since 1993. For the series MVP pitcher Cole Hamels was selected.

World Series

The best-of- seven series started on 22 October 2008 and ended on 29 October 2008. The winner of the NLCS, the Philadelphia Phillies won the series 4-1 games against the Tampa Bay Rays. For the World Series MVP Cole Hamels was selected.
