2008 Table Tennis European Championships

The 27th Table Tennis Championship ( officially: LIEBHERR European Table Tennis Championships 2008, in German LIEBHERR European Championships 2008) was held in St. Petersburg from 4 to 12 October 2008. It team, single and double competitions were conducted. Venue was the Sports and Concert Complex Peterburgski.

Competition mode

In the team competition met in the newly introduced group stage the top 16 participating nations in four groups of four ( " Divisions Championships " ) to each other. Subsequently, the group first, and the second of each group played against each other in the knockout system for places one through eight. The Third to Fourth fought in the knock-out system for places 9 to 16

Similarly, the next- strong 16 nations were divided into four "Challenge " groups and then played in a knockout system for the positions 17 to 24 and 25 to 32 The remaining weakest nations were in the men's two " standard " groups divided. Here then for places 33 to 39, it went to the ladies there was only a "standard " group with six participants who were fighting for places 33 to 38.

In single and double the athletes started right in the knockout system.

Results Women

Team

The German ladies came in tenth place at the European Championships. The team of head coach Jörg Bitzigeio lost the placement match against Poland.

In the German women's team following players were used: Wu Jiaduo Zhenqi Barthel, Kristin Silver iron, Amelie Solja. In Group C, the team against Romania and Serbia won 3-1, losing to Croatia 0-3. Because of the games the least gained, it was so in third place behind the tied ladies from Croatia and Romania. In the games for places 9 to 16 the team won against Belgium (3-0 ) and France ( 3-1 ). The match for third place went to Poland with 1:3 lost.

Results Men

The German player Timo Boll won in all three competitions, the gold medal and is the most successful player of the championship. In addition, he managed to three -fold title defense, which until then in the 50- year history of the European Championship no player or any player was still successful.

Germany's table tennis men defended their team title at the European Championships 2008. 's Team national coach Richard Prause the player Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov won in the final against Belarus 3-2. Third were the teams from Belgium and Austria.

In the German men's team following players were used: Timo Boll, Dimitrij Ovtcharov, Bastian Steger, Christian Suss, Patrick Baum. The team was undefeated in Group A first. It defeated France, Denmark and Hungary. In subsequent games for the places one through eight, it won against Russia ( 3-1 ), Austria ( 3-2 ) and Belarus ( 3-2 ).

Singles

Timo Boll defended his individual title in 2007 and won for the third time the European Championship in singles. In the final he beat Vladimir Samsonov, against whom he was previously still clearly inferior in the team competition. Third place went to the Austrian Robert Gardos and Werner Schlager.

Doubles

Despite a 1:3 residue in the final the Germans Timo Boll and Christian Suss could defend their title successfully. They won 4-3 against the duo Werner Schlager from Austria and Trinko Keen from the Netherlands.
