2008 Tour de France, Stage 1 to Stage 11#Stage 1

The first stage of the 2008 Tour de France on 5 July was 197.5 km long and took the riders from the starting location Brest in Brittany after Plumelec. A total of three sprints and four climbs the fourth category were on the program.

For the first time since 1966, the tour started back with a flat stage instead of the traditional prologue. After three kilometers, formed a breakaway group that emanated from Lilian Jegou, which was joined by Thomas Voeckler, Stephane Auge, David de la Fuente, Rubén Pérez, José Luis Arrieta, Geoffroy Lequatre and Björn Schröder. The group drove a maximum lead of 8:15 minutes out of the peloton and divided all mountain and sprints among themselves. The first mountain stage won Björn Schröder ago Thomas Voeckler, the second mountain stage the order was reversed, the third mountain stage Lilian Jegou won before Voeckler and Schröder, the fourth David de la Fuente before Schröder and Voeckler. This Schröder and Voeckler were tied and each had the same number of first, second and third places. Thus, the intake in the target via the carrier of the Mountain jerseys had to decide. Geoffroy Lequatre secured meanwhile all sprints. However, the field could reduce the protrusion of the runaways and on, so that was merged again 10 kilometers from the finish. Jegou and de la Fuente could still hold the longest at the top. The last 1.7 kilometers from the finish in Plumelec led with 6.2% slope uphill to the Côte de Cadoual. This led to renewed breakaways, among others, Stefan Schumacher and Kim Kirchen. However, shortly before the finish übersprintete Alejandro Valverde the other and reached by a small margin to finish first.

Because there is no Zeitbonifikationen at the intermediate sprints and at the Zielankuft on this tour, he was appointed as the stage winner and the first winner of the yellow and green jerseys. Thomas Voeckler reached before Björn Schröder the target and thus secured the mountain jersey. Ins white jersey Riccardo Riccò rode.

The Spaniard Manuel Beltrán tested positive after the first stage of the doping agent EPO.
