2009–10 EHF Champions League

At the EHF Champions League 2009/10 participated in 36 handball club teams, who had in the previous season in their home leagues qualify for the competition. It was the 50th staging of the EHF Champions League and the European Cup of Champions. The Cup games began on 4 September 2009, the final in the Final Four took place on May 30, 2010 for the first time in Cologne's Lanxess Arena instead. Defending champion was the Spanish club BM Ciudad Real. The final between FC Barcelona and THW Kiel were won by the Kiel.

Mode

Qualification: The qualification was held in the framework of several tournaments. Three groups of three teams and two groups of four teams, with each team playing in a group once against any other team. For each group the best team qualified. Retiring twelve teams moved into the EHF Cup.

Group Stage: There were four groups of six teams. In a group, everyone plays against everyone a return match; the four best group reached the knockout stages. Retiring teams not attracted into the EHF European Cup Winners' Cup.

Second round: The second round was played in a knockout system with return game. The winner of each game moved into the quarter-finals.

Quarterfinals: The quarter-final was played in a knockout system with return game. The winner of each game moved into the semi-finals.

Final Four: For the first time there was a Final Four tournament, the semifinals and finals was held on May 29th and 30th 2010 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne. The semi-final was played in the all-in - system. The winners of each game moved into the final. The loser of each game moved into the play-off for third place. It was per semifinals played only one game. Also, the final and the third place match was played on easy mode.
