2009 Copa Libertadores

The Copa Libertadores 2009 due to the sponsorship of the banking group Santander and Santander Libertadores Cup was the 50th edition of the most important South American football competition for club teams. As in the previous year participated in 38 teams from 10 member associations CONMEBOL and from Mexico. Mexico sent - as in recent years - at the invitation of three teams. The tournament began on January 27 with the qualifying round and ended on 15 July with the final second leg.

Participating teams

The following teams will participate in the Copa Libertadores 2009. Since Liga de Quito is automatically here as defending champion, Ecuador was allowed to send four instead of the usual three starter for the tournament, two had in the qualification. The teams that had yet to qualify for the main round, are marked in the table with a (Q).

Mode

Case of a tie in the group stage on goal difference for the next round was decisive, then the number of goals scored, after which the away goals. If these are equal, decided in the group stage the lot, in the knockout rounds of penalty kicks. Only in the final followed, where appropriate, the score is level after return game before the penalty shoot another extension.

Qualification

The first legs took place on the 27th, 28th and 29th January 2009, which ( local time), the return matches on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of February. Had the first named team in the first leg at home, the second in the return game.

The date indicated refers in each case to the local time. Many games take place in the evening in South America, which corresponds to the early hours of the following day in Central Europe.

For the last sixteen qualified to the First and Second each group.

The games were not paired, but determined by a set list. At the eight group winners according to their rank, the numbers of the second-best group winners, the numbers were awarded 1 to 8, which is the best group winners received 1, 2, and so were the eight group runners- 9 to 16 in the second round then played 1-16, 2 - 15, 3 - 14 ... so the best group first against the worst runners etc.

* The games in Mexico could not be discharged due to the influenza pandemic in 2009, the opposing teams came on without a fight.

Final

The final of the Copa Libertadores was played in home and away matches, in contrast to the rest of the tournament on away goals rule was overridden. The final was also the only round where it is not immediately a penalty shootout, but only gave an extension Torgleichheit at the end of normal playing time in the second leg.
