Regular Season

Brief explanation gaming operations and table structure

The AL and the NL are each divided for the operation of gambling in three divisions. The assignment is based on regional criteria: East, Central and West Division. The game operation ran from 6 April 2009 to the 4th of October 2009 ( exception: Play the Central Division, see below).

The table placements are responsible for reaching the postseason: the three respective division winners and the best after winning percentage in two of the three divisions held in two rounds of the championship in the American or National League from. The respective champions then meet in the World Series each other (see below).

The ranking of teams in the table above it during the season basically from the current ratio of wins to games overall as so-called Winning Percentage. The reason for this is the uneven distribution of games on the calendar, so that some teams have since played three or more games more than others. Thus, for example, the balance of a team A with 15 victories and 15 defeats ( .500 expressed as the corresponding percentage ) for exactly equivalent considered with the balance of a team B, which scored 16 victories and 16 defeats at the same time. For the final tables listed here but this is irrelevant, since the end of the season all teams have played since 1961 usual 162 season games. Therefore, disclosure of victories and defeats ranges ( Draws are uncommon these days ).

By entering GB (Games Behind ) is documented, how late a tracker on the table is first. This is expressed, how many wins the tracker at the same time defeat the leader theoretically needed to achieve equal status. The specification is expressed precisely to 0.5 GB Games: If, for example, Team A 10 wins and 5 losses, Team B, however, 9 wins and 5 losses, a victory would already own ( without a loss of A) lead to table tie.

To indicate the development during the season, at least, was also the table position of teams at the time of the All-Star break, the break in the play mode at the All -Star Game, was added. Similarly, the fall championship in football as an intermediate state is determined middle of the season. The second intermediate information is rather arbitrary, based on the date of 31 August to assess about five weeks left in the season to the extent to which each Division had already been decided at this time ( such as the AL East Division ) or, where appropriate, at this time Leading was still displaced from first place ( as happened in the AL Central Division ).

American League

After finishing the regular season resulted in the American League the following placements:

PS = Postseason; Number = ranking on seedings and WC = Wild Card (Best Second of all divisions)

W = Wins ( Win ), L = Losses ( Losses ), GB = Games Behind ( behind leaders: number of necessary defeats the leader at the same time own victory )

Mid-season = All Star Break ( 13 to 15 July 2009)

The best start caught the Blue Jays, who led early in the season until mid- May, the division before Boston. However, after ( 27-14 ) they fell back steadily and were clearly suspended the All -Star Break of the table top. The Rays than last year's surprise winner ( the division and the AL in total ) started, however, rather tedious and reached until mid- June, a significant positive overall record (more wins than losses). The lack of success in recent years Orioles were the end of April the last time at .500 and from then on were cemented at end of table. When the Blue Jays fell back, the way was open for the Red Sox fairly constant. However, between them and the league Croesus Yankees it was long an open race. This tipped after the Yankees in succession recovered from the eight defeats in direct comparison against the Red Sox and won their next five comparisons for themselves. From an at least theoretical three-way battle became a duel, when the Rays in early September after another finally adopted with 11 defeats out of the title race ( and also their starting rotation weakened by the sale of Scott Kazmir to the LA Angels ). The Yankees finally brought in the last season playing their comfortable lead over the Red Sox to the finish and were able to clear retaliate with more than 100 wins for last year's third place and miss the postseason. For the Red Sox, the residue against the Yankees but was no big deal, since the wild-card rule reaching the postseason seemed assured (which then also proved true ).

The Indians were at no point season time achieve a positive overall balance of 2009. After five home defeats was fast only mitigation target. It was certainly not help that after the sale of CC Sabathia now another very good pitcher had to be sold during the 2008 season with Cliff Lee. At least not against Lee had a home loss to be accepted ( as on May 30 against Sabathia ). For the Royals, chronically unsuccessful in recent years, it started surprisingly well, partly because Zach Greinke could retract ten wins and three losses as a pitcher by the end of June. From the end of May, however, the positive table times were gone, and at the end of the season came out again only a split second last place for the Royals. For the White Sox, the Perfect Game by Mark Buehrle against the Tampa Bay Rays was on 23 July, the season highlight par excellence. By the end of August, the chances were given to the post-season, but the residue on Detroit finally remained unassailable. Everything seemed to speak for the Tigers, who led the Division since mid-May, and who have 26 games left in the season seven wins ahead of the Twins. But the slump to just 11 wins to the end of the season at the same time furiously aufspielenden Twins initially led to a thrilling series at home against the Twins in which there were two Home and Away Games. As in Chicago, only the last was won by the last three games, the tie of 86-76 both teams had to be broken by a single decision game in Minneapolis. Here won the Twins with a walk-off win after twelve innings, ie after three extensions. With this fifth victory in a row, the Twins got their revenge for leaving last year, when she was still lost the post -season place on the White Sox almost identical manner.

For the Athletics, the 2009 season was unspectacular, since one of the start afterwards ran to the other teams as in 2007 and 2008. The first Series win against the LA Angels 2-1 was also already on the 3rd round of the last positive standings. For the Mariners, it was foreseeable when actually ordinary course of the season starting at the end of July that against the Angels was no way through. This captured the Division peak just before the All-Star break and extended their lead over the Rangers quite successful continuously in small but effective steps out. Compared to the 100 victories in the previous year were "only " 97 wins is certainly not a disappointment; now it was to retaliate for the significant post - season defeats against the Red Sox in the previous two years.

The teams in the NL West cut in 2009 was significantly better than last year: In 2008, the Dodgers have filed 84 victories for the Division victory, while in the other two divisions of seven teams had boast a better record. For the Diamondbacks, however, the 2009 season was rather disappointing as they now had to read the table early on from the bottom to a second place in the previous year. In the end they were even surpassed despite the 14 wins of her pitcher Dan Haren from the Padres, in April and May after a furious start ( 10-6) only three of the next 19 games won, but then again ten consecutively for the last positive interim status ( 23-22 ). This league was shrunken to a three-way battle in which fell behind the Giants, despite a significant improvement compared to 2008 from the end of August and on. Maybe her pitcher Tim Lincecum was missing ( 15-7 ) the last brilliance that had awarded him in 2008. For the Rockies Wild Card - place was quite early predictable: they came forward against the Dodgers to never quite, to the rear and towards the other divisions it looked however consistently promising. For the Dodgers, it was therefore a smooth ride towards post-season with the third division win in four years, and this time even with the best record in the National League.

Postseason

Overview

To determine the winner of the American League and the National League as a participant in the 2009 World Series, the Division Series and then the respective championship series were played between 7 and 25 October 2009 by initiating. For this purpose, first met the three division winners and the best second (so-called wild-card ) in two Division Series encounters in best-of -five successive mode ( ALDS or NLDS = American or National League Division Series). Then the winner of the Division Series encounters played in the best- of-seven procedures the respective League Champion ( ALCS and NLCS = American or National League Championship Series ).

The Wild Card winners usually play against the best division winner, so the team with the most wins in the regular season games. As the Boston Red Sox and the Colorado Rockies, however, could not meet in the same division playing the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers, both played against the second-best division winning their league.

Division Series

The Division Series took place generally very one-sided, with the teams still strong occurring in the regular season of Boston and St. Louis showed surprisingly weak, while the defeat of the Twins was to be expected against the favored Yankees.

ALDS

In the American League met for the third time in succession, the Boston Red Sox to the Los Angeles Angels. After two hefty defeats in previous years ( 0:3 in 2007 and 1:3 in 2008 ), the Angels were burning for revenge, which also succeeded them with a sweep. The previously successful with five wins Twins had directly from their victory in the playoff over Detroit to New York, there to be knocked out by a rested opponent almost immediately.
