2009 Major League Soccer season

The 14th Major League Soccer season begins the regular season on 19 March 2009 and ended with the MLS Cup 2009 on November 22, 2009 at Qwest Field in Seattle. All results since the founding of the MLS can be found in the Eternal table the MLS.

Real Salt Lake defeated in the 2009 MLS Cup Los Angeles Galaxy 5-4 after penalty shoot-out after the team parted after the end of regular time 1-1. In the overall table at the end of the season RSL reached the eighth of fifteen places.

Innovations

  • The Seattle Sounders FC takes as the 15th team in Major League Soccer ( Western Conference ) on the operation of gambling.
  • For the playoffs, the two best teams in each conference and the four-point best teams of all other teams qualify. So far, the three best teams in each conference were fixed qualified.
  • Microsoft touts Xbox 360 Live the Seattle Sounders as a new sponsor.
  • The MLS Reserve Division was disbanded. In it, the second teams of the MLS clubs played. Thus, the limits for the maximum number of players in a squad of 18 was increased to 20. At the same time the boundary of the players who are at the Developmental Roster, was reduced from 10 to 4. Thus, the total number of players decreases, which may have an association, from 28 to 24 players.

Overall table

1Toronto FC can not qualify for the U.S. Open Cup, since the club comes from Canada. If the team concludes the season on a qualifying place for the U.S. Open Cup, and this number is automatically assigned to the next highest team. The same is true for a qualifying place for the CONCACAF Champions League. Toronto FC can qualify for this competition just across the Canadian Championship. Also in this case qualifies, Toronto should get a qualification place, the next higher team.

Budweiser Golden Boot

The Budweiser Golden Boot is awarded to the best scorers in the regular season.

MLS All -Star Game

The 14th MLS All -Star Game took place on July 29 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy instead. Opponent was the Everton FC from the English Premier League.

Everton won on penalties 4-3. After the regular time it was 1-1. It was played no extension. Tim Howard, goalkeeper from Everton, was named player of the game.

The goal for the MLS All -Star team scored Brad Davis of Houston Dynamo. Louis Saha scored the goal for Everton.

National Cup

For the third round of the Cup will automatically qualify the three best teams from the two Conferences of the previous season. The other teams from the Major League Soccer play in a pre- qualifying tournament against each other for the remaining two spots play off.

Any qualified MLS team plays against a winner from the second round of the Cup. Possible opponents come from the lower USL leagues.

Winner of the tournament was the Seattle Sounders FC with a win over DC United.
