2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens

The 5th 7- Rugby World Cup was held from 5 to 7 March 2009 in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates take place. It included a men's tournament with 24 teams and a tournament for the first time the women with 16 teams. It was the first major rugby tournament in the Middle East. World Champions Wales were among men and women in Australia.

Application

Seven countries, as many as never before, had shown interest in hosting the World Cup. After Kenya and South Africa's withdrawal five countries remained. The United Arab Emirates, Australia, the Netherlands, Russia and the U.S. lodged a formal applications. The choice of the International Rugby Board (IRB ) eventually fell in the second round on the United Arab Emirates. The reasons for this decision, the IRB named the construction of a new stadium with 50,000 seats and the success of the U-19 World Cup and the tournament Dubai Sevens in the recent past.
