The second World Baseball Classic was held between 5 and 23 March 2009. The group games were played in Tokyo, México DF, Toronto and San Juan, the second-round games in Miami and San Diego, Finalort was Los Angeles. Defending champions Japan won the tournament against Olympic champion South Korea 5-3 after 10 innings, ie for an extension.

To the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, the Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka was named the second time since 2006.

Participants and tournament mode

The 16 participating nations are the same as in the first World Baseball Classic in 2006, which go back into four groups in the first phase of the tournament. However, the mode of the group stage was changed: The Rounds 1 and 2 will be played in the double-elimination mode:

  • The winners of the opening games against each other. The winner of this game is already qualified for the second round.
  • The losers of the opening matches deny a knockout game. The winner plays against the loser of the other game of the second second-round place.
  • The two qualified teams participate in a placement game, which for the classification in the next round of the tournament has meaning.

Exhibition Games

Took place between February 28 and March 12 test matches of national teams against club teams from the Major League and the Japanese professional league between the actual tournament games. They were held at the Tokyo Dome and smaller stadiums in the United States.
