Season during the regular season

American League

April

As of April 30 resulted in the American League the following placements:

PS = Postseason; Number = ranking on seedings and WC = Wild Card (Best Second of all divisions)

W = Wins ( Win ), L = Losses ( Losses ), GB = Games Behind ( behind leaders: number of necessary defeats the leader at the same time own victory )

The Rays were the best in the AL East out of the blocks and set a new franchise record run on. Your only Series defeat they conceded at home against the Yankees, who hardly inferior to them, and also a good start. Striking is the relatively poor start of the Red Sox, among other things, were swept in a home series four games of the Rays.

In the AL Central much running as usual, only the White Sox are worse than expected there.

May

In the AL, the Dallas Braden Perfect Game of was on May 9, 2010 (see Milestones ) the most outstanding pitcher performance. Noteworthy here is that Tampa Bay had to accept for the second time within a year, such a defeat ( in July of last year by Mark Buehrle ). For the Seattle Mariners less beautiful: Ken Griffey Jr., the active player with the most home runs is used only sporadically in its 22nd season and could face the End of career. Milton Bradley, Enfant Terrible with the eighth team in eleven years as a pro and since this season also with the Mariners, left the squad for two weeks for undisclosed personal reasons, but was at the end of the month back in action.

For the LA Angels of victory on May 29 against the Mariners ended exceptional: After he had taken the decisive points for the Angels with a walk-off grand slam to Kendry Morales injured while celebrating at home plate and pulled up a surgery requiring fracture to the lower leg.

As of May 31 resulted in the American League the following placements:

Arrows: ▲ improvement prev. April, ▼ degradation prev. April, otherwise see AL April

In the AL East are still the Rays front ( and are best MLB team total ), but have lost some of their time between big lead on the Yankees and lost of the last ten Mai- six games. Still surprisingly good the Blue Jays, while the Red Sox were able to make little ground to the front. The Orioles remain clear last and worst overall MLB team.

In the AL Central, the Indians were passed through to 9-18 in May to the last place, while the Twins could call the Division Leading in common with the Yankees as the second best AL team. The distances between the teams have become quite large, thus preventing short-term course change, including between the Tigers and the White Sox.

In the AL West, the Angels are as amazingly bad, while the erfolgsentwöhnten A's and Rangers look forward to leading the division courses. The Mariners continue to disappoint.

June to All-Star Break (11 July 2010)

At the All-Star break (11 July 2010) following placements resulted in the AL:

Second half of July and August

31 August 2010, resulted in the AL following placements:

Arrows: ▲ improvement prev. All-Star Break, ▼ degradation, explanations: see AL April

Since the All-Star break has done little in the AL East: Yankees and Rays march almost in lockstep, making them the two strongest teams in the MLB. This is the battered injury problems Red Sox hard, so the would have a much better chance at the postseason in another division. Even the Blue Jays in fourth, six games over .500, so with a positive record ( more wins than losses). The Orioles broke on August 2, 2010, Interim manager Juan Samuel by the experienced manager Buck Showalter, since Samuel was able to win only a third of the games since his appointment in June.

In the AL Central, the Twins have something set off with a burst of speed in the first place, while Detroit risks losing the connection to the top.

The Rangers dominate in the AL West, but also benefit from the relatively poor performance of their persecutors, all of which have negative records.

September

On 21 September, the Minnesota Twins secured by the victory of the AL Central Division first team to the Postseason Participation, ie eleven games before the end of the season. The Texas Rangers followed them on September 25, as the winner of the AL West Division ( eight games remaining ). Since September 28, the team of the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees were certainly qualified in the AL East; on the final day of the season, the Rays were able to secure the victory of the AL East Division, while remained for the Yankees the wild card place.

May

The twentieth Perfect Game Major League history was thrown in the NL. 29 May 2010 Roy Halladay won with the Philadelphia Phillies against the Florida Marlins 1-0.

In the NL East, the Braves were able to catapult from last place to first place in April in May. Conversely wandered the Mets from the first to the split second to last place, but this division among themselves by far the umkämpfteste the distance of all teams.

The NL Central on the other hand develops into 2 - or 3 -class society: the front, the Reds and the Cardinals, behind the Brewers, Pirates and Astros. For the Cubs mediocrity remains.

In the NL West, the Padres look forward, after the disappointing performance in 2009 ( 20 games behind the Dodgers at the end of the season ) to be competitive. The Diamondbacks, however, seem like last year already and no chance of losing touch with the other teams.

The Cincinnati Reds celebrated on September 28, winning the NL Central Division, which wait for the Reds again means the postseason after 15 years. On the final day, the San Francisco Giants secured by a 3-0 victory against San Diego in the NL West Division; this defeat cost the Padres also the chance of the wild card, the ( also on the final day ) brought the Atlanta Braves.

Postseason

→ Main article: NLDS 2010 ALDS, 2010 NLCS, 2010 ALCS, 2010 World Series 2010

Mode and participants

Play As in previous years in the post-season, the top four teams to the respective winners of the American League and National League, which then in the World Series 2010 World Series winners determined.

Since 6 and no later than October 24, 2010, the Division Series and then the respective Championship Series will be played. For this purpose, first take the three division winners and the best second (so-called wild-card ) will consist of two Division Series encounters in Best-of -Five mode ( ALDS or NLDS = American or National League Division Series). Then the winner of the Division Series encounters play in the best- of-seven procedures the respective League Champion ( ALCS and NLCS = American or National League Championship Series ).

The Wild Card winners usually play against the best division winner, so the team with the most wins in the regular season games. If the team with the most wins but come from the same division as the Wild Card winner, plays the wild card team against the second-best division winning their league, so as to avoid a division internal duel.

In the American League stood as a participant in the Minnesota Twins (winner AL Central), Texas Rangers ( AL West winner ), Tampa Bay Rays ( AL East winner ) and the New York Yankees ( Wild Card ) firmly. Because the rule described above, the Yankees met the Rays ( with the best record), but on the Twins.

In the National League to qualified the Philadelphia Phillies ( NL East champion ), the Cincinnati Reds (winner NL Central), San Francisco Giants (winner West ) and the Atlanta Braves ( Wild Card ) for the post-season. Again, not playing the Braves against the best team from Philadelphia, but against the Giants.

Scheme

In the postseason, it came to the following conclusions:

ALDS, NLDS ( Division Series ): Best of Five; ALCS, NLCS (Championship Series): Best -of -Seven

Special achievements and milestones

Individual services

  • Dallas Braden of the Oakland Athletics threw on 9 May 2010 the 19th Perfect Game in the history of MLB. In the 4-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, not a single opposing player came on a base. He threw it six strikeouts.
  • Manny Ramirez of the Los Angeles Dodgers scored the 2.500sten hit of his career in the game against the Florida Marlins on April 10.
  • Iván Rodríguez of the Washington Nationals on April 12, managed the 550ste double of his career. This was before him only 22 other players.
  • Ubaldo Jimenez of the Colorado Rockies succeeded on 17 April at the 4-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves a no-hitter; This was the first no-hitter in the history of the Rockies.
  • In the three games lasting series of the Philadelphia Phillies at the New York Mets from 25 to 27 May, the pitcher the Mets ensured that the Phillies did not score a single run. Such a feat was most recently in 2004 the Minnesota Twins succeeded. A comparable "shutdown sweep" the Mets managed only once before (1969).
  • In the next series of the Phillies Roy Halladay threw 29 May 2010, the twentieth Perfect Game in the history of the Major Leagues. Josh Johnson and the Florida Marlins as the loser of the game itself could also be just a run of the Phillies, so that the game ended with the minimum result of 1-0.

The almost perfect game

On 2 June 2010 the pitcher Armando Galarraga would have played the third Perfect Game MLB season by the Detroit Tigers almost. In the match against the Cleveland Indians, he had already identified 26 of the 27 batters of the opponent without them could reach the first base. After the last batter Cleveland's Jason Donald, a ground ball to first base man struck, threw this to Galarraga, who covered the first base. The pitcher caught the ball and made Donald from how the video recording shows. The experienced first- base umpire Jim Joyce, however, decided on a safe to the batter.

In retrospect, Joyce admitted his mistake and regretted deeply that his mistake a pitcher has stolen the Perfect Game.

As a result, the performance of Galarraga is run as a one-hit shutout, since according to the official, and thus valid rating in the last at-bat scored a hit.

The next day Galarraga handed instead of the manager, the line-up card for the next game to Joyce. The two shook hands and Joyce knocked the pitcher on her shoulder. In addition, the sponsor General Motors Galarraga handed a red Corvette. It was stressed that this should not only be a sign of the almost perfect game, but also be understood for the sporting fair dealing towards the referee.

Coach dismissals

In the season and immediately after the end of season eleven teams have fired their manager, so the sporting Principal. Since the Baltimore Orioles again set back their interim coach after less than two months into the second term and the Seattle Mariners did not stick after the season at their interim coach, had a total of 13 managers affected by this:
