2011–12 Football League Cup

The League Cup 2011/12 was the 52nd edition of the tournament; The Carling Cup or League Cup. The tournament started with 92 clubs.

The competition started on 29 July 2011 with the first round and ended with the final at Wembley Stadium in London on 25 January 2012. The winner of the competition was Liverpool.

Preliminary round

The winner from last year, Birmingham City, taking part in the Championship and will actually play in the first round, will participate only in the third round, so the new members of the Football League AFC Wimbledon and Crawley Town have to play against each other. For the first times since 2002/03, a preliminary round will take place.

First round

The draw for the first round was held on 16 June 2011. The Burnley and Hull City were the only teams from the Football League, who went in the second round of the tournament, as they were the two bestplatziertesten teams last season. The other 70 teams in the Football League had already compete in the first round.

Second Round

In the second round, the twelve Premier League clubs got in, who could not qualify for a European competition in the last season.

Third Round

From the third round had to line up the eight teams that had qualified for the current season for European competitions. Aldershot Town and Shrewsbury Town, from the Football League Two, were the teams from the lowest league, which was still represented in the competition.

The semi-final matches were held in January. The semi-final was the first and only round that was discharged with return game.
