2011–12 VHL season

The season 2011/12 Wysschaja Hockey League is the 20th season of the second highest Russian Hockey League and the second since the founding of VHL.

Changes compared to the previous year

  • The PHK Krylia Sovetov Moscow ceased the operation of gambling.
  • The HK Dynamo Tver was relocated to Balaschicha and changed his name to HK Dynamo Balaschicha.
  • The Donbass Donetsk HK is taken as the first Ukrainian club in the league.
  • Titan Klin is taken as an expansion team in the league.
  • Sokol Krasnoyarsk is taken as an expansion team in the league.
  • Lokomotiv Yaroslavl was admitted as a visiting team later in the league.

Mode

The 22 teams of Wysschaja Hockey League were divided into two conferences before the season according to regional criteria. After the plane crash near Yaroslavl renounced Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League due to the death of almost the entire professional squad to participate in the KHL season 2011/12. Instead, the team took a composed mainly of young players team later than the competition in the game operation of the WHL part. The 22 regular teams in the WHL denied of 52 games against each other, as well as a match against Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, which consequently played 22 games. As a guest team in the Western Conference - but not belonging to this - Yaroslavl played its home games against the teams in the Western Conference and its away games against the teams in the Eastern Conference. Because of the shortened game plan for Yaroslavl to the playoff participants of the Western Conference decided not on points, but to determine the percentage of points achieved, the two division winners automatically stood as a group first of the Western Conference. The top eight teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs then, in which the second division champion is played. For a win within regular time each team receives three points for a win after extra two points with a defeat after extra time there is a point and a defeat after regular time zero points.

The final was played in best-of -seven mode. The games 6 and 7 were no longer required after four wins from Toros Neftekamsk.
