Prior to the tournament, criticizing Barry Hearn, since 2010 Chairman of the WPBSA that some of the top players did not perceive her invitation for the tournament. According to Hearn they hurt so the project to make snooker more popular internationally and to develop new markets. This is especially surprising, therefore, as many players had complained prior to Hearns took office about the fact that there were too few official tournaments on the snooker main tour.

The player Mark J. Williams, John Higgins, Ding Junhui, Neil Robertson, Stephen Maguire, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Judd Trump, Mark Allen and Matthew Stevens called Hearn in this context by name.

Reason for the many rejections of the players, in addition to the lack of world ranking points at the tournament, probably the date shortly after the Shanghai Masters 2011.

The original commitment of Mark Allen turned out to be a misunderstanding between Allen and his management. On August 22 it was announced that Martin Gould nachrückte for Allen.

Results

After all the rejections Mark Selby was the top player of the tournament. With him came the number one of the provisional world rankings and winner of the Shanghai Masters from the previous weekend. However, he teamed up after a long tournament and the transition from Asia to South America already in the season opener against Stuart Bingham in round 2 heavy and he saved himself against Peter Ebdon still in the decision frame, then retired but from. Big surprise of the first round was local hero Igor Figueiredo yet it past in his second year as a pro in no full ranking tournament of the Round of 64, but was defeated by Jamie Cope at the outset a current top -16 player, while with 114 points also the first Century -break of the tournament scored. Even against Graeme Dott he then started briskly and led 2-1 before the Scot with three frame profits still prevailed in a row and in the semifinals Peter Ebdon could convincingly beat.

The other Scot in the tournament, veteran Stephen Hendry, lost his very first tournament frame against the Brazilian Amateur Noel Rodrigues, was from then on, but for a long time again a convincing performance. Eight Frame consecutive wins secured him not only victory over local hero, but then also the semi-finals after a smooth 4-0 win over world ranking Sixth Ali Carter. In the semifinals he met Shaun Murphy, as he had previously lost only one frame. The Englishman, who showed up in fine form, he had but little to counter and then defeated with 1:5.

How well Murphy was in the form, then turned in the final against Graeme Dott. The world ranking seventh from England punished any inaccuracy and took advantage of every opportunity. Dott, after number ten in the world, made in the first four frames only 60 points and Murphy crowned his victory finally with a 139er break, the highest tournament break, for smooth 5-0 win.
