2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup

The CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011 was the 21st playout of the continental championship in football for North, Central America and the Caribbean and 11 under the name " Gold Cup " and was held from the 5th to the 25th of June in the USA.

At participated in this tournament 12 teams that competed first in groups and then in the knockout system against each other. Since 1991, the United States is the sole, or in co-operation (1993 and 2003 with Mexico ), host of the tournament. The 2011 final was played at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California.

Tournament winners Mexico qualified for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 in Brazil.

Qualification

The qualification for the Gold Cup was organized by the three regional associations of the CONCACAF:

North America ( NaFu zone)

All three North American organizations (Canada, USA, Mexico) are set for the CONCACAF Gold Cup and needed incur no qualifiers.

Central America ( Copa Centroamericana zone)

All seven organizations took part in the Copa Centroamericana Central American Cup 2011, held in Panama in January. The first five teams are qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Caribbean ( CFU- zone)

24 of the 30 associations of the CFU participated in the Caribbean Series in 2010. From August 2010 to 21 organizations played a qualification; Jamaica as the defending champion and Martinique to host the final round, which took place from 19 to 28 November 2010, 8 teams were set. The first four teams in the Caribbean Cup have qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Venues

Overall, the tournament was held in 13 venues. Each game day, within a group was held in each stadium. The quarter-finals were held in two stages, the semi-final was contested in a stadium. The Rose Bowl in Pasadena was the venue of the finals.

Of the 13 stadiums are only three classified as pure football stadiums. These are the Red Bull Arena, Livestrong Sporting Park and the Home Depot Center. All others will be mostly used for games of the NFL.

Positive drug tests in Mexico

On 9 June 2011, announced that five Mexican players tested positive for clenbuterol. This result refers to a test that was carried out on 21 May 2011 during the Mexican training camp before the Gold Cup. Therezinha, Christian Bermúdez, Édgar Dueñas, Francisco Rodríguez and Guillermo Ochoa was suspended then by the Mexican Football Federation. The General Secretary of CONCACAF, Chuck Blazer, immediately summoned a meeting of the member associations to discuss the situation. The spokesman of the CONCACAF, Ben Spencer, said that the game against El Salvador remains in the standings. However, the meeting was adjourned in order to gather more information. The Mexican Football Federation announced on June 14, 2011 announced the second test, called the B sample is negative. On June 19, Mexico was given permission to be allowed to replace the suspended players. After food contamination was found to be the cause, the Mexican Football Federation decided, with the support of FIFA, not to punish the players tested positive.

Mode

In the final round of the 12 participants form three preliminary groups of four teams, of which the top two qualify for the quarter-finals. In the USA the tournament from Fox Soccer Channel and Univision was transferred. Other stations were TeleFutura and Galavision. Univision, TeleFutura and Galavision transferred all games in Spanish. The Fox Soccer Channel passed all the games of the USA and the encounters of the final round.
