2011 FIBA Americas Championship

The Basketball America Cup 2011 ( officially: Campeonato FIBA Americas 2011 (english The FIBA Americas Championship 2011 )) is the 15th edition of this tournament and took place from 30 August to 11 September 2011 at the Argentine Mar del Plata. In the tournament, it was next to the continental championship for national representative teams of men of the Continental Association FIBA Americas at the same time to qualify for the basketball tournament at the Olympic Games in 2012. Among the ten participating teams, the two finalists qualified directly for the Olympic Games. The three runners-up teams were allowed to participate in the second round in 2012 following the qualifying tournament for the Olympic basketball competition. As world champion United States was already directly qualified for the Olympics, we opted not to participate in the Continental Championships. The games were only played in Poli Deportivo Islas Malvinas.

Regional qualification according to the sub-zones of the Continental Association. For those already qualify automatically as hosts Argentina Venezuela was declared the fourth- placed team of the Campeonato Sudamericano 2010. The omission of the United States Panama also has been invited as the fifth- placed team of the Campeonato Sudamericano 2010.

Mode

At the tournament in a preliminary round was held two groups of five teams as a round-robin tournament. The two lowest-ranked teams in the first round and then eliminated from the tournament, while the other teams playing off taking with their first round results, a second round as a continuation of the round tournament against the top four teams of the other preliminary round group. The five team placed this second round was eligible to participate in the qualifying tournament for the 2012 Olympics, while the four semi-finalists playing off the two automatic qualifying places and medals in this tournament knock-out system.

Second round

The matches of the second round, in which the semi-finalists and another participant was determined for the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games, took place between the fifth and eighth September 2011. The battered results of the preliminary round are indicated in italics.

Finals

The winners of the semi-finals 10 September 2011 were directly qualified for the basketball competition of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
