Defending champion Rafael Nadal was. He again reached the final, but lost in four sets against Novak Djokovic. He had previously warded off two match points as last year in the semi-final against Roger Federer and could after the final defeats in 2007 and 2010, the third attempt for the first time to win this title. It was his third Grand Slam title in 2011 and the fourth overall in his career.
