2012–13 EHF Champions League

At the EHF Champions League 2012/13 participated in 37 handball club teams, who had in the previous season in their home leagues qualify for the competition. It was the 53rd staging of the EHF Champions League and the European Cup of Champions. The Cup games began on September 8, 2012 the final of the Final Four took place on June 2, 2013, for the fourth time in Cologne's Lanxess Arena instead.

Mode

Qualification: The qualification was held in the framework of several Final Four Tournaments: Four groups of four teams and one group of two with return game. For each group the best team qualified. Retiring thirteen teams moved into the EHF European Cup.

Group Stage: There were four groups of six teams. In a group, everyone plays against everyone a return match; the four best group reached the knockout stages.

Second round: The second round was played in a knockout system with return game. The winner of each game moved into the quarter-finals.

Quarterfinals: The quarter-final was played in a knockout system with return game. The winner of each game moved into the semi-finals.

Final Four: For the fourth time, there was a Final Four Tournament; the semi-finals and finals were held on 1 and 2 June 2013, the Lanxess Arena in Cologne. The semi-final was played in the all-in - system. The winner of each game moved into the final. The loser of each game moved into the play-off for third place. Qualification

The draw for the qualifying was held in Vienna on 3 July 2012. It take part 18 teams who have previously qualified for the competition. The four participants in the Wildcard Tournament were determined on 21 June at the edge of the EHF Congress.

Qualified Teams

Each of the three sides of a pot to be distributed to a group of one to three. From the pot one team plays against a team in the fourth group. It never get two teams out of a pot in a group. The group W was made up of teams that are the EHF according raise the level of the Champions League. There five teams had registered for the wildcard tournament. On June 21, it was decided that the Slovenian club RK Koper was not allowed to participate in this tournament. On 2 August 2012, the EHF announced that the insolvent AG Copenhagen will not participate in the Champions League season 2012/13. The vacant place in Group C was the Danish runner Bjerringbro - Silkeborg accorded its place has been awarded the wildcard tournament at RK Koper.
