2012 Copa Libertadores

The Copa Libertadores 2012 due to the sponsorship of the banking group Santander and Santander Libertadores Cup was the 53rd playout of the most important South American football competition for club teams. This season, participated in a total of 38 teams, 35 of the 10 member associations of CONMEBOL, including defending champion Santos of Brazil and the winners of the Copa Sudamericana 2011 CF Universidad de Chile from Chile, and three from Mexico. The tournament began on 25 January with the qualifying round and ended on July 4, with the final second leg.

The Brazilian club Corinthians Paulista defeated in the finals of the CA Boca Juniors, thus remained unbeaten throughout the competition, thus securing his first title in this competition.

Participating teams

The following teams took part in the Copa Libertadores 2012. Since Santos qualified automatically as defending champions, Brazil was allowed six instead of the usual five sending participants to the tournament, where two had in the qualification. Mexico, which actually belongs to the CONCACAF, sent three teams to the tournament by invitation of which had in the qualification. The teams had to go to qualify for the main round, are marked in the table with a (Q).

Mode

Case of a tie in the group stage on goal difference for the next round is decisive, then the number of goals scored, after which the away goals. If these are equal, the winner will be decided. In the knockout rounds is also considered the away goals rule in point- and Torgleichheit. Is equal in number followed without extension immediately a penalty shootout. Only in the finale there is a draw after 90 minutes, before the penalty shoot another extension.

The first legs took place on January 25, the return matches on February 1, 2012. Had the first named team in the first leg at home, the second in the return game.

Second round

The first legs were on May 2, the return matches on 9 May 2012.

For the second round each of the first and second each group qualified.

The games were not paired, but determined by a set list. At the eight group winners according to their ranking in the start numbers of the second-best group winners, the numbers were awarded 1 to 8, which is the best group winners received 1, 2, and so were the eight group runners- 9 to 16 in the second round then played 1-16, 2 - 15, 3 - 14 ... so the best group first against the worst runners etc.

Quarterfinals

The first legs were held on 23 and 24 May 2012 on the 16th and 17th, the return games.

Semifinal

The first legs were held on 20 and 21 June 2012 on the 13th and 14th, the return games.
