2012 Copa Sudamericana

The Copa Sudamericana 2012 was the 11th playout of the second most important South American football competition for club teams, which has acted under the name " Copa Bridgestone Sudamericana " due to the sponsorship of the tire manufacturer Bridgestone. It took the first 47 teams from 10 member associations of CONMEBOL, including defending champions Universidad de Chile, in part. Argentina was as had six and eight participants Brazil; the remaining eight countries this time four participants in the competition. This was played as usual in the second half.

Mode

Like last year, there were before the knockout stages again two rounds. However launched, by increasing the number of participants, this time in the first round of the eight countries (except Argentina and Brazil ) with their four teams already complete in the 1st round. Participants from Argentina and Brazil started only in the second round, defending champions Universidad de Chile only in the second round. The contest was fought out as usual from the first round to the final in pure knockout system with return game. With point- and Torgleichheit was the away goals rule. First round

Participants were four teams from eight countries of South America, with the exception of teams from Argentina and Brazil. The first legs took place between July 24 and August 2, the return matches between 8 and 22 August 2012.

2nd round

For the second round, qualified the sixteen winners of the first round and six teams from Argentina and eight teams from Brazil, where the clubs from those two countries competed separately against each other. The first legs were between 1 and 29 August, the return matches between 24 August and 19 September 2012.

Second round

For the second round, the 15 winners of the 2nd round and defending champion CF Universidad de Chile qualified. The first legs took place between 25 and 27 September, the return matches between 24 and 27 October 2012.

Quarterfinals

The first legs took place on November 7, 2012 October 31, the return games.

Semifinal

The first legs took place on 21-22. November and the return matches on 28-29. November 2012 instead.

First leg

Return

The return match was stopped in the half-time break with the score at 2-0 to Sao Paulo. This was due to fights the players on the field and later in the dressing rooms. Néstor Gorosito, manager of CA Tigre, also accused the Brazilian police, who should defuse the situation, to have beaten his players and threatened with weapons. CA Tigre then refused to stand for the second half. The game was seen in spite of protests by the CONMEBOL in favor of Sao Paulo.
