Defending champion was Rafael Nadal, who won the French Open this year. Nadal moved into the final without dropping a set, where he met his long-time rival Novak Djokovic current. For this it was the first finals at Roland Garros. In the prior of 6:4, 6:3, 4:6 and 1:2 in the favor of Nadal, the game was due to rain interrupted and continued until the following day. In the end, Nadal retained in the fourth set 7-5 the upper hand and secured his seventh title at the French Open and the total eleventh Grand Slam victory. He is now the sole record winner at Roland Garros, at the Grand Slam titles he drew equal with Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg. Surprise of the tournament was the Belgian David Goffin, who as a lucky loser could advance in his first Grand Slam at all to the last sixteen. Finally against Roger Federer was defeated despite a 1-0 set lead in four sets, but made thereby in the world rankings 45 places well.
