Background

After the Milwaukee IndyFest Will Power led the Drivers' Championship with 31 points ahead of James Hinchcliffe and with 35 points ahead of Scott Dixon. At the engine manufacturers Chevrolet led with 6 points ahead of Honda and with 31 points, ahead of Lotus.

The rear wing of the Dallara DW12 was adapted for this race. He was allowed a maximum at an angle of 37 ° and are not using a Gurney flap. Training

1 Heat Race

Hinchcliffe took over in the 52nd round of the leadership of Castroneves, who then defended himself against Hunter -Reay. Justin Wilson had taken the fourth place in the meantime. In the 68th round, there was a yellow phase, when Viso and Power collided. Both dropped out. During the caution period Castroneves took the lead again, which he kept for many laps.

In this yellow phase Dixon and Briscoe completed another pit stop in which they lost not many places because drove at that time only 13 drivers on the lead lap.
