Draft order

The draft order was determined on 10 April 2012 after completion of the regular season of the NHL season 2011/ 12 by the draft lottery. The 14 teams took part, which did not qualify for the play- offs this season; or their right to vote holders. The winner of the lottery was able to ascend a maximum of four positions in the order. The worst team in the regular season had a chance of 48.2 percent to win the lottery; the best of 14 not qualified for the playoffs teams in 14th place had a chance of 0.5 percent.

The Edmonton Oilers won the lottery and moved thus to a place from second to first position in the draft order. Thus they secured for the third time in a row the first overall draft pick. The Columbus Blue Jackets, the worst team in the regular season, slipped by from first to second place in the draft order. The Oilers are the second team in the NHL history, which has the first right to vote for three consecutive years. This privilege had previously only the Quebec Nordiques, who possessed in 1989, 1990 and 1991 on the first- overall pick.

The draft sequence of the 16 play-off participants is established after the Stanley Cup final. The Stanley Cup winner is set to position 30, the final opponent at position 29. At positions 27 and 28 excreted in the Conference Finals teams will be sorted. The remaining play-off teams will be placed in the regular season based on their table stand. The rule is that the team is in position 15 with the fewest points table. The draft order is valid for all rounds of the Entry Draft; the teams can thereby acquire voting rights on transfers of other teams as well as own dispose to other teams.
