2012 WTA Tour Championships

The WTA Championships 2012 ( also known as TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships - Istanbul 2012 known) were a hard court tennis tournament for women in Istanbul, Turkey. The tournament took place from 23 to 28 October 2012 at the Sinan Erdem Dome, and was after the four Grand Slam tournaments, the on points and prize money with the highest prize tournament of the WTA tournament in the calendar of the ladies. The Tennis Championships WTA Tour in women's singles and double were held for the second time in Istanbul. Previous venues were Doha and Qatar.

The Czech Petra Kvitová in the singles and the American duo Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond in the doubles were the defending champions. All three players were again in 2012 qualified for the tournament. Kvitová was only the first group match against Agnieszka Radwańska contest and had to cancel the remaining games after that. For them, the Australian Samantha Stosur moved after that was the first substitute player denied the other games, but without a win in the first round was eliminated.

Winner of the single was Serena Williams, who defeated Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-3. The double title secured the Russian pairing of Maria Kirilenko / Nadia Petrova against Andrea Hlaváčková / Lucie Hradecká 6:1, 6:4.

Qualification

The top eight ladies of the WTA Tour qualified for this competition. In addition there were two reservists.

Competition mode

In the round-robin tournament phase (English Round Robin ), played four players in two groups each against all. The two winners of each group qualified for the semi-finals, which was held after the knockout system. The winner of each group played against the second of the other group and the winners of these games contested the final.

  • Petra Kvitová was only the first match against Agnieszka Radwańska contest and then had to cancel the further tournament because of a virus infection. For them, Samantha Stosur moved as the first replacement player after the tournament and denied the other games.
