Background

Ma Qinghua was replaced from this run of Alexander Rossi. In Hilmer Motorsport Conor Daly was replaced by Robin Frijns. Rossi and Frijns started earlier in the Formula Renault 3.5 - Frijns was in this series champion, Rossi eleventh.

Training

In free practice Fabio Leimer set the fastest time before Sam Bird and Stefano Coletti.

Qualifying

In qualifying, Leimer takes the lead. Second fastest was Marcus Ericsson with nearly one second behind Leimer, ahead of Felipe Nasr.

After qualifying, two sentences were pronounced: Kevin Giovesi was transferred because of handicapping by Johnny Cecotto Jr. to 3 positions back and Sergio Canamasas was excluded because of a " deliberate change of direction by the other driver was at a disadvantage " in the rating.

James Calado was moved because of a penalty in the Sprint race in Sepang by ten positions to the rear.

Main race

At the start of the formation lap Ericsson choked off the engine. He was then pushed into the garage, where he afterwards started the field.

The start of the race was good for Leimer and he kept the lead. Behind it, there were several changes of position. Coletti overtook Nasr and took position two. Bird started from ninth and improved to position three. Losers in the start was Simon Trummer, who lost many positions.

In the first round Coletti put the leaders under pressure. For an overtaking maneuver but it never came. Jolyon Palmer, who had started the race from twelfth place, improved to fifth place. Meanwhile, had to quit the race at the pit lane Daniël de Jong.

After the field had drawn a little apart, Leimer began a head start on Coletti build. End of the fourth round turned Pål Varhaug his car with a technical problem from. At the end of the sixth round Stéphane Richelmi was the first driver who came to his stop. He changed from the soft to the hard tires. Canamasas had meanwhile received a drive-through penalty because he had Calado pushed off the track. Two laps after Richelmi Nasr and Bird went into the same box. Both stops did not run optimally. Two laps later, the two leaders came in the same round to their pit stop. Your pit stop went without problems and Leimer held before Coletti. The latter came just ahead of Rossi back on track, who had also already completed his pit stop. In the meantime, Nasr drove fast lap times and improved two positions against Bird and Richelmi. Nathanael Berthon had exceeded the speed limit in his pit stop in the pit lane and received a drive-through penalty.

There were some drivers that were started with the hard tires and completed their stop later. Leading was Adrian Quaife - Hobbs, however continuously forfeited time against Leimer and thus did not go for the win. Behind Leimer went Coletti and Rossi, both of which benefited from the upcoming overtaking and caught up.

With only 16 laps to go was Tom Dillmann was the first of those in the box, which had started with the hard tires. His lap times were at first much faster. Also Quaife - Hobbs came a little later to the pit stop and picked up the soft tires from.

On lap 20 there was a collision between Frijns and Richelmi. For Richelmi it meant the end of the race, Frijns was able to continue, fell by an additional pit stop back to the last place. In addition, he was given a drive-through penalty for causing the collision.

Shortly before the end of the race there was a curiosity: Giovesi had urged Mitch Evans of the track. Instead Giovesi but teammate René Binder was inadvertently punished for the offense.

Dillmann and Quaife - Hobbs was in the meantime faster than Simon Trummer, who drove in seventh, and overtook him. Then they made good time on Bird. By the end of the race, however they no longer came within striking distance.

Leimer won the race ahead of Coletti and debutant Rossi. Julian Leal drove the fastest lap of the race. Since he was not placed in the top ten, the points went for the fastest lap at Cecotto.

Sprint race

Dillmann started from pole position and kept well after the first two curves the lead ahead of his teammate Bird. Coletti started from position seven and also well positioned himself under braking into the first corner outside to then have an advantage in the subsequent curve. He managed to do and he improved to third position.

In the first corner there were two collisions. Rio Haryanto Ericsson drove into the back and lost his front wing. For Ericsson, the collision was the end of the race, as his rear wing was damaged. Furthermore, it came between Rossi and Leimer to a contact. While Leimer Bolide remained largely undamaged, Rossi had to pick up the box to a new front wing.

During the first round Bird Dillmann already put under pressure and overtook him in the final corner.

After the first round Bird led before Dillmann, Coletti, Quaife - Hobbs, Nasr and Leimer.

While braking into the first corner Dillmann tried to attack from Bird to counter and began overtaking. Bird kept the lead, but Dillmann lost in the maneuver momentum and had to overtake Coletti. Shortly afterwards overtook Nasr Quaife - Hobbs and then also Dillmann.

Quaife - Hobbs went before and behind him worse lap times than the driver, so the pursuers aufschlossen soon. Dillmann was also not able to keep up with the leaders and formed a large gap in front of him.

Four laps to go Quaife - Hobbs had four riders close behind Palmer before Calado, Leimer and Daniel Abt Also at the top of Bird, Coletti and Nasr also went close.

Meanwhile, Coletti had problems with his car and had to leave Nasr happen. In addition, Coletti could not keep the connection. In the last round Nasr was brought up close to Bird. While braking into the last corner, he tried an overtaking maneuver and both drove side by side on the curve. Bird accelerated out better and won the race by eight hundredths of a second ahead of Nasr. They were followed by Coletti, Dillmann, Calado and Palmer. Berthon set the fastest lap of the race, but was not in the top 10, making the fastest lap at Bird went.
