The GP2 race in Barcelona in 2013 was the third round of the GP2 Series season in 2013 and was from 10 to 12 May at the Circuit de Catalunya in Montmeló instead.

Background

After the run in as- Sachir Stefano Coletti led the drivers' standings with ten points ahead of Fabio Leimer and 16 points ahead of Felipe Nasr. Rapax resulted in the team standings with two points ahead of Carlin and eight points ahead of Racing Engineering.

Jon Lancaster took over the cockpit of Pål Varhaug at Hilmer Motorsport.

With Fabio Leimer (twice ) occurred at a former winner of this race.

Qualifying

Shortly before the start of qualifying hung dark clouds over the track. All drivers lined up on a speaker output, long before the session began. When the traffic light on green jumped round put all drivers for a time. Marcus Ericsson initially drove the fastest lap.

This seemed almost too rich for the pole position until shortly before the end teammate Stéphane Richelmi undercutting the time. However, Ericsson was also on his fast lap, undercutting his teammates again. Thus, Ericsson claimed pole position ahead of Richelmi and Nasr.

Main race

Ericsson started well, while Richelmi lost one position to Coletti. Even in the first round he lost a further position to Nasr. Leimer had at the start of a collision with Calado and Sam Bird and had at the end of the first lap to go in the box to his front wing. Calado also came into the pits and abandoned the race there.

In round five, there was an accident. Sergio Canamasas and Tom Dillmann fought for a position whereby Nathanael Berthon unlocked. While braking in curve 10 Berthon braked later than both the vehicle ahead and drove both drivers to the rear. This Berthons bolide was thrown through the rear tires of the other two forwards. Berthon finished the race in the gravel and Canamasas with torn rear wing in the pit lane. Dillmann's car suffered no damage, he continued the race. Berthon got for causing this accident a transfer back to ten positions in the sprint race.

As the pit stop window opened came Frijns, Jolyon Palmer and Alexander Rossi in directly. Your direct competitors, Ericsson and Bird, initially remained outside. As well as they had completed their pit stop, they fell back behind the trio. Kevin Ceccon, Cecotto and Dillmann stayed out longer and led to the race.

Ceccons lap times were continuously slow, so he came in as the first of the trio. In round eleven, there was a collision: In the last chicane several cars drove side by side. Ericsson had positioned itself between Palmer and Bird. As the gap became smaller and smaller, there was a contact between Bird and Ericsson, the suspension of Ericsson's Dallara of them wore a damage and he had to finish the race.

Meanwhile, led Cecotto before Dillmann and Mitch Evans. Frijns on position four was the first driver who had already completed his pit stop and drove 20 seconds behind Cecotto.

As Dillmann came to a stop, he moved again to the hard tire compound. He drove so fast lap times and unlocked Richelmi on. This forced Dillmann, however, into a spin, for which he was punished later. Dillmann then drove further fast laps and was good at making several positions in the situation.

Nasr was also fast on the road and overtook first Coletti and then Palmer. Palmer was still going to lose a position to Bird, which he defended. It was a contact between the two, with Bird spun and had to finish the race. Dillmann overtook however Coletti and in the following round Lancaster. When he shortly afterwards ansetzte also an overtaking maneuver against Palmer, he was too far off the track and had gained his positions give back.

Frijns won the race ahead of Nasr Palmer and dill man. Since Palmer was prosecuted to the race because of Abdrängens Bird with a 20 -second penalty after, Lancaster took third place, while Palmer was seen as a tenth.

Sprint race

At the start Dillmann killed the engine and stopped - all the drivers behind, he managed to evade. Coletti and Frijns started well and both were located after the first turn to position two and three. Coletti sat Cecotto immediately under pressure and passed him the exit of the curve 3 Behind Frijns and Nasr were fighting for the third position. In curve 9 Cecotto slipped briefly and had to go behind the barriers. Frijns and Nasr seize this opportunity and overtook him.

After the first round thus led Coletti before Frijns, Nasr, Cecotto, Palmer and Rossi.

In subsequent rounds, there were no changes of position on the syringe of the field and the distances between the drivers increased. Dillmann moved to racing half tires since his deconstructions. As a result, he set the fastest lap of the race, which was not rewarded with the two extra points for the fastest lap, because he did not finish the race in the top ten.

In the penultimate round, there was a collision, which changed the midfield: While Cecotto previously drove slow lap times and behind him many drivers had been dammed, Canamasas had overtaken several pilot until he was behind Cecotto. Rossi lost during its positions to Daniel Abt and Rio Haryanto. Canamasas made ​​an overtaking against Cecotto by curve 12 in a narrower line selected and corner exit racing alongside Cecotto. At the subsequent short straight Cecotto moved further to the right and caused a contact. Both drivers lost momentum, which allowed the abbot and Haryanto, turn to venture overtaking attempts. Haryanto slowed while later than Canamasas in curve 14, and drove him to the rear, with the rear Canamasas and Haryanto lost his front wing. To avoid a collision, abbot braked heavily on to get past the cars of Haryanto and Canamasas. The drivers behind use the outdoor area around the accident site to escape, thereby Abt forfeited several positions.

Abbot fell back behind his teammate Calado. Shortly after he overtook his teammate back, Leal had a contact and consequently collided with the Plug limitation. Coletti won the race ahead of Frijns and Nasr. The other points went to Palmer, Cecotto, Rossi, and Ceccon Dept. The points for the fastest lap got Coletti.

Following the race Haryanto was punished for causing a collision with a transfer back to ten grid positions at the next race in Monaco.
