Initial investigations suggest that the bus company Mondo Travel ascended unrestrained a traffic jam before the toll station at Avellino. Of these, 7 cars were pushed into each other. Then the bus broke through the guardrail and plunged into a 30 meter deep gorge.

The salvage operation designed due to the rugged and forested slopes to be very difficult. The survivors were taken to hospitals in the area. The tour group was on the way back from a pilgrimage Telese Terme to Naples. The body of the bus driver has been transferred to the coroner to further investigations. The exact cause of the crash is not yet known, tire damage is suspected.

Further studies open a new theory that the brakes of a 18 year old bus may have been defective. Grinding marks on the guardrail, extending over several hundred meters, and let oil and gear remains on the highway suspect that the bus driver could have tried to slow down the bus by engine brake and sheet metal brake.
