Defending champion was Andy Murray, Stanislas Wawrinka defeated the Swiss in the quarterfinals in three sets 4:6, 3:6 and 2:6. From the then current top ten in the world ranking Jo- Wilfried Tsonga said an injury from his participation. Shortly before the start of the tournament gave James Blake announced to end his career after the U.S. Open.

For the first time in tournament history of the U.S. Open no Americans reached the round of sixteen. Tim Smyczek, Jack Sock and John Isner failed as the last remaining U.S. players in the field respectively in the third round.

In the final game of the set to position two Rafael Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic the top seeds in four sets. He won his 13th Grand Slam title and the second title at the U.S. Open after 2010.
