2013 Winter Universiade

The 26th Winter Universiade should first be held in the Slovenian city of Maribor on 30 January to 9 February 2013, and would thus have been the first Universiade on Slovenian soil. On 16 March 2012, the FISU announced to have withdrawn from the discharge of Maribor rights. This was due to serious delays in the construction of sports facilities and finally the resignation of the entire organizing committee. As a new host, the Italian region Trentino was named.

Application

Maribor was the only candidate to host the Winter Universiade in 2013. Too, Almaty ( Kazakhstan) and Calgary (Canada) had shown interest in an application, but refrained from. Almaty was later awarded the contract for the Winter Universiade in 2017. The total budget of the event should be at 252.6 million euros, of which 71.8 million euros should be on investment in new sports facilities, 158 million euros for the construction and refurbishment of accommodation and 22, accounting for 8 million euros for other infrastructure such as roads, gondolas, etc.. About 70 % of the budget should benefit the tourism after the Universiade.
