2013 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships

The 37th Ice Hockey World Championships U20 juniors of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships of 2013 in the age group of under- twenties ( U20). In total, between the 9th December 2012, and January 20, 2013 40 teams in the six tournaments in the top division and the divisions I to III part.

The world champion was the third time the crew of the United States who could beat Sweden in the final 3-1. The German team managed by the third rank in the relegation round and reaching the ninth place of the league in the top division, Switzerland finished sixth in the Top Division and improved compared to the previous year by two ranks. Austria was fifth in Group A of Division I and was thus able to just avoid relegation in the B group yet.

Mode

The Ice Hockey World Championship will be played in a total of 6 divisions with different participants strength. The top division playing with ten teams, the divisions I and II with twelve and the Division III with six participants.

In Divisions I and II, the twelve teams in two groups are divided into six teams. The Division III will be held in a group with six teams, and depending on the number of registered participants an optional qualification is held.

From the top division only the last placed the relegation round descends into the Division IA. From Selbiger only the first place winner rises next year on the Top Division, during the Six -placed descends in the Division IB. In return, the winner of the IB division advance to the Division IA. From the Division IB also the last one descends into the Division II A. The rise of regulation of the IB division with a promoted and relegated applies equally to the Division II A and II B. A direct relegated from Division III there is not in this sense. Depending on a possible qualification to Division III, the two last-place teams in the Division III the previous year must start with the newly reported national teams in qualifying to play the then two free places.

Top Division

The U-20 World Championship was held in the Russian city of Ufa from 26 December 2012 to 5 January 2013. It was played in Ufa Arena ( 8,250 seats) and the Sports Palace Salavat Yulaev with 4,043 seats. A total of 110 175 spectators attended the 31 tournament games, corresponding to an average of 3,554 per game.

At the tournament was attended ten national teams who played in two groups of five teams. In this case, the two groups are based on the standings of the teams in the World Cup 2012 after following key together:

The U20 selection of the United States defeated the defending champion Sweden 3-1 in the final of the tournament, winning the third U-20 World Championship titles, most recently in 2010, the U.S. had triumphed. The Russian junior national team won the 3rd place match 6-5 after extra time, so that the Canadian representative for the first time remained without a medal since 1998. Latvia increased the last to the relegation round off to Division IA, while Norway will play at the tournament in 2014 in the top division.

In the individual awards the American John Gibson was the big winner. In addition to choosing the All- Star team of the tournament, he was named most valuable player and best goalkeeper. Among the fielders, Ryan Nugent -Hopkins was characterized as top scorer and best forward, while Jacob trouba received the trophy of the best defender.

Mode

After the group matches - each team played four of them - the first round, the two group winners qualified directly for the semi-finals. The runners-up and third ever denied a qualifier for the semi-finals. The Fourth and Fifth of the group matches contested - if you bring the result of the direct encounter of the first round - the relegation round and found this one relegated to Division IA.

The tournament of group B was held on 10 to 16 December 2012 at Ukraine's Donetsk. The games were held comprehensive Druzhba Palace of Sports in 4,100 spectators. The tournament winner was the Polish U20 selection with a 3-2 victory over the Italian representative, with tournament top scorer Kacper Guzik scored all three goals for Poland.

Division III in Sofia, Bulgaria

The Tournament Division III was held from 14 to January 20 2013 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The games took place in the 4600 -seat Winter Sports Palace, Sofia. For the first time took a U20 representative of the United Arab Emirates participated in a World Championship.
