2014 Elk River chemical spill

When chemical accident at Elk River flowed on 9 January 2014 to 10,000 gallons or about 38 m³ 4- methylcyclohexyl methanol in the Elk River in Charleston, West Virginia. The liquid with a concentration of 5.6 mass percent had expired due to leakage from 46,000 gallon storage tank the Freedom Industries. A drinking water reservoir was contaminated by the accident. The authorities called on the population to use the water only for the toilet and for extinguishing fires. The authorities had to distribute drinking water using tankers.
