2018 Summer Youth Olympics

The III. Summer Youth Olympic Games to be held in 2018 in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. For orientation, the cities of Buenos Aires, Glasgow, Guadalajara, Medellín, Poznan and Rotterdam had originally advertised. Posen had his candidacy, however, retired in October 2012.

Application Process

2011

The application process for the Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2018 began on 15 September 2011, when the IOC sent letters to all NOCs, in which they were informed about the further application process. The candidate cities were to be called the IOC until 1 March 2012.

2012

After the application deadline, the IOC, the six candidate cities were announced on 2 March 2012. Representatives of these cities had to agree to the application procedure on 15 March and had finally to 15 October 2012 to hand over their application documents to the IOC. By December the application documents were reviewed by the IOC as well as by independent experts.

2013

In January 2013, the IOC announced the candidate cities and created this then more questions about their application. Videoconferencing between the evaluation commission of the IOC and the individual bid committee in March 2013 and the application documents were the basis for the evaluation report. Subsequently, on July 4, 2013, the host city of the III. Summer Youth Olympic Games elected by the members of the IOC.

Candidate cities

Buenos Aires, Argentina

The candidature of Buenos Aires in 2018 was announced on 30 August 2011, and is Argentina's first bid for Youth Olympic Games, but the Argentine capital applied in 1936, 1956, 1968 and 2004 unsuccessfully for the Olympic Summer Games. It is scheduled to host the Games from 11 to 23 September 2018. Most of the 26 sports venues, only two of which need to be rebuilt, can be reached within 30 minutes from the proposed Olympic Village and are found in the two zones " Green Corridor " along the Río de la Plata and " Roca Park" in south of the metropolis. In the River Plate stadium, the Olympic ceremonies will also be held.

Glasgow, United Kingdom

The Scottish Glasgow wants to put in its bid to host the Games of the great success of London 2012 and the 2014 built for the Commonwealth Games sports venues, such as the sports complex National Indoor Sports Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. Guadalajara, Mexico

Mexico's second largest city, Guadalajara ran already for the Youth Games in 2014, withdrew his application but prior to award. 2018 dares to make another attempt and was already able to prevail against the national competitors Monterrey. Details of the application have not yet been announced, but it can be assumed that the built for the 2011 Pan American Games sports venues like the Estadio Omnilife in Guadalajara plan can be used.

Medellín, Colombia

With around 2.2 million inhabitants Medellín is one of the largest cities in Colombia. Thanks to the holding of the South American Games in Medellín in 2010, there already most plants for possible discharge. Most of the sports venues are near Estadio Atanasio Girardot. More details about the application will announce the bid committee soon.

Rotterdam, The Netherlands

For the application of the Dutch port city of Rotterdam, the Rotterdam Ahoy is to be expanded. However, it is questionable whether the candidature will be continued, as financial guarantees over € 75 million could not be obtained in a timely manner. The bid committee still hoped to be able to deliver the guarantees within a few months the IOC yet.

Former applications

Poznan, Poland

Poland's fifth largest city of Posen had already applied to the II Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2014, but was eventually defeated the Chinese competitors Nanjing with 42:47 voices. In 2018 another attempt was considered a co-favorite poses, but had his application on October 9, 2012 to withdraw because the city council had refused the necessary financial guarantees.
