( 2031 ) Stearns (1973 SC; 1973 UG) is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered by the American astronomer James Gibson on September 21, 1973 at the Felix Aguilar Observatory. Studies of its light curve suggest an unusually long rotation period.

Designation

The asteroid was named after Carl Leo Stearns (1892-1972), professor of astronomy at Wesleyan University and was the comet C/1927 E1 ( Stearns ) (1927 IV, 1927d ) discovered.
