20th Chess Olympiad

The 20th Chess Olympiad took place from 18 September to 13 October 1972 in Skopje ( Yugoslavia, now in Macedonia ) instead. Venue were the Pavilion Hall.

Survey

It was attended by 63 teams, identified in eight preliminary groups, the teams for the final groups A to D. 373 players took part in the competition, including 35 grandmasters and 68 international masters. In both the opening acts as well as in the final group round robin tournaments were held. The first two teams each opening act qualified for the Final Group A

Tournament director was Jordan Ivanovski from Yugoslavia. The main referee acted Max Euwe of the Netherlands and Alexander Kotov from the Soviet Union. The cooling-off period was 40 moves in 150 minutes, then one hour for each 16 moves. The rankings were determined based board points ( BP), team points ( MP), direct comparison and a special Berger system.

Prize for best game

The prize for the best game went to Vlastimil Hort ( CSR) for its Black victory against Werner Hug ( SUI).

The team of Albania did not occur for political reasons in round 12 against Israel and left the tournament. She was disqualified. The results to date are listed here, but not included in the overall ratings.
