(2121) Sevastopol

( 2121 ) Sevastopol is an asteroid of the inner main belt, discovered by Soviet astronomer Tamara Smirnova on June 27, 1971 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj (IAU code 095).

Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid, there had been before: on April 29, 1932 under the provisional designation 1932 HM at the Union Observatory in Johannesburg, in November 1936 (1936 WD) at the French Observatoire de Nice, 1938 (1938 DY ) on Iso - Heikkilä Observatory of the University of Turku, 1939 (1939 tO) again at the Union Observatory in Johannesburg, on 29 September 1952 ( 1952 SZ) at the Goethe Link Observatory, Indiana, and on 28 August 1968 ( 1968 qj1 ) at the Crimean observatory in Nautschnyj.

The Italian astronomer Vincenzo Zappalà defined in a 1995 publication ( et al. ) Affiliation of the asteroid for Augusta family, one named after (254 ) Augusta group of asteroids.

( 2121 ) was named after Sevastopol Sevastopol on 28 January 1983, the largest city in the Crimea peninsula. The appointment was made for the 200th anniversary of the founding of the city.

On 26 August 2010 it was found in photometric observations of ( 2121 ) Sevastopol that the asteroid has a companion, which has about 41 percent of its size. Both bodies orbit a common center of gravity in 37.1 hours. The companions received the provisional designation S/2010 ( 2121 ) 1
