( 2142 ) Landau is one of the main asteroid belt, which on 3 April 1972 by the Russian astronomer Lyudmila Ivanovna Chernykh at the Crimean Observatory ( IAU code 095) was discovered in Nautschnyj.
The asteroid was named after the Soviet physicist and member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences Lev Davidovich Landau - named in the late 1940s and collaborated in the early 1950s in the project of the Soviet hydrogen bomb, and in 1962 awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics (1908, 1968).
