(2170) Byelorussia

( 2170 ) Byelorussia is an asteroid of the inner main belt, which was discovered on September 16, 1971 in Nautschnyj (IAU code 095) at the Crimean Observatory. An unconfirmed sighting of the asteroid it had previously already given on 14 December 1949 with the provisional designation 1949 XH at the Goethe Link Observatory, Indiana.

The Italian astronomer Vincenzo Zappalà has the assistance of a hierarchical cluster analysis in a publication of 1995 ( et al. ) Extrapolated a membership to the asteroid Nysa family, one named after (44 ) Nysa group of asteroids. The group is also called Hertha family, according to (135 ) Hertha.

( 2170 ) Byelorussia was named after the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic on 1 April 1980. After the capital of Soviet Minsk, the asteroid of the outer main belt ( 3012 ) Minsk was named five years later.
