21st National Hockey League All-Star Game

The 21th National Hockey League All-Star Game was held on January 16, 1968 in Toronto. The match took place at the Maple Leaf Gardens, the venue of the Stanley Cup winner Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs scored a tight 4-3 victory over the NHL All-Stars in front of 15,753 spectators.

Before the game was determined that it would be the last NHL battle between the reigning Stanley Cup champion and a selection of the best NHL players. NHL President Clarence Campbell explained that in future the Western and Eastern Conferences should play against each other and there should be no fixed location for the All-Star games. The 21th All-Star Game was also the last in which the players from the previous year were chosen for the match.

Tragic death of Bill Masterton

The match took place in a depressed mood, as Bill Masterton, a player of the Minnesota North Stars, was checked by two players of the Oakland Seals on the ice, which he hit his head on the ice and died the next day in hospital.

Immediately after this incident was a general discussion of whether the Hockey Players should wear helmets in the future or, as previously allowed without further play. One of the top players of the 1960s, Gordie Howe was not wearing a helmet, but it recommend to the next generation of players. Bobby Hull, however, was seriously in the future to play with helmet. During the game, however, contributed only two players a helmet - JC Tremblay, who already bore the whole season already one and Brian Conacher - in response to Mastertons death.

During the All-Star game was beaten before introducing a trophy in memory of Masterton. Since the end of 1968, the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is annually awarded to the player who best embodies passion and fairness.

Special

For the first time played for Toronto in the All- Star Game with Al Smith, a player who in the previous year no professional use for the Maple Leafs had on the account, because ordinary Goalie Johnny Bower was injured and could not play.

Despite the subdued mood of Toronto coach Punch Imlach celebrated his silver wedding on the night of All-Star games.
