( 22740 ) Rayleigh is an asteroid of the outer main belt, which by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809 ) of the European Southern Observatory was discovered on 20 September 1998.
He is one of the few celestial body that has a 2:1 resonance to Jupiter.
The asteroid is named after the discoverer of the noble gas argon, the British physicist John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh ( 1842-1919 ), named.
