( 2289 ) McMillan is one of the main asteroid belt, which was discovered on September 24, 1960 as part of the Palomar - Leiden survey by the Dutch research team Cornelis Johannes van Houten, Ingrid van Houten - Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels.

The naming of the asteroid was chosen in honor of the American astronomer Robert S. McMillan, the project manager of the Spacewatch program.
