The assignment of the Chess Olympiad 1976 in the Israeli Haifa presented FIDE president Euwe before some difficulties. The very first test as introduced Swiss system is not met especially in the strong chess nations too get any love. Heavy weighed but that the Soviet Union at that time had no diplomatic relations with Israel and the choice of venue sharply criticized. Nevertheless Euwe held fast to the decision. The Soviet Union and the associations of their sphere of influence boycotted the tournament. 34 teams took part in a counter- Olympics in Libyan Tripoli.

In Haifa, 48 teams played in the open group and 24 teams in the women. The German men's team consisted of Wolfgang Unzicker, Luděk Pachman, Hans -Günter Kestler, Dieter Mohrlok, Peter Ostermeyer and Klaus Wockenfuß. In the women played Anni Laakmann, Hannelore Weichert, Thea prill alley man and Ursula Wasnetsky.

Chess Olympiad of men ( open group )

In the Swiss system each evaluation teams are equal among themselves drawn. Each team (Team ) was per team fight use four players. The team competition four single points (board points) will be awarded, which are given in the following table of the thirteen rounds under the code of the opponent team. The 7th Chess Olympiad of women in 1976 in Haifa was held in four initial groups and three final groups (A, B, C). The final A was played as round-robin tournament.
