(233 ) Asterope is an asteroid of the main asteroid belt, which was discovered on May 11, 1883 by Alphonse Borrelly at the Observatory of Marseilles.

It was named after celestial bodies Asterope, the mother of the beautiful Hippodamia from Greek mythology.

Asterope moves at a distance of 2.4 ( perihelion ) to 2.9 ( aphelion ) astronomical units in 4.3 years around the sun. The orbit is inclined 7.7 ° to the ecliptic, the orbital eccentricity is 0.10.

Asterope has a diameter of about 100 kilometers. It has a geometrical albedo of 0.09 and 19.7 hours in rotating about its own axis.
