23rd Chess Olympiad

The 23rd Chess Olympiad was held in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires from October 25 to November 12, 1978. After the Chess Olympiad in 1939 it was the second Chess Olympiad in South America and the third ever in America according to the Chess Olympiad to Havana in 1966. Organization

Organization leader of team chess tournament was Rodolfo Zanlungo while Héctor Rossetto acted as tournament director. Referee Paul Klein from Ecuador. There was both an open tournament, were allowed to participate in the male and female players, as well as an all-female tournament.

The players were initially two and a half hours to think for forty trains and then one hour for each additional sixteen trains.

At the Chess Olympiad took 66 teams participate with a total of 388 chess players. Argentina used the aligners exclusive right to participate with two teams. Each team could consist of up to seven players.

The teams played with four players against each other, with the pairings were drawn according to the Swiss system. For the ranking of the teams board points, Buchholz points and last team points were crucial in that order.

There in 1848 games were played. Since only two Filipino players were published in the first round against Andorra, the other two games were decided without a fight in this encounter.

The Hungarian team consisted of Lajos Portisch, Zoltán Ribli, Gyula Sax, Andras Adorjan, István László CSOM and Vadász. Gold Medals for the best board result was obtained by Viktor Korchnoi (board 1, Switzerland ), Adam Kuligowski (board 2, Poland), Georgi Tringow (board 3, Bulgaria), Glenn Bordonada (board 4, Philippines), James Tarjan ( 1st Reserve Board, USA ) and John Turner ( 2nd Reserve board, U.S. Virgin Islands).

Germany (Rank 4) played with Robert Hübner, Wolfgang Unzicker, Helmut Pfleger, Klaus Darga, Hans -Joachim Hecht and Otto Borik.

The Switzerland came at # 10 and went on with Viktor Korchnoi, Werner Hug, André Lombard, Heinz Wirthenson, Andreas Huss and Edwin Bhend.

Austria was 19th with Karl Robatsch, Franz Hölzl, Franz stubble, Walter Wittmann, Karl Janetschek and Arne droughts.

Playing conditions

Four groups were formed of eight teams, each fought out a round-robin tournament. The top two teams from each group came into the final Group A, which then played a round robin tournament for places one through eight. The third and fourth place in the opening acts came into the final Group B, the fifth and sixth place in the final Group C, and the seventh and eighth place in the final Group D, the corresponding Final Placements nine to sixteen, 17 to 24, and 25 to playing off 32.
