2,4-dichlorophenol is a colorless solid with a phenol -like odor, which belongs to the group of chlorophenols.

Upon heating of 2,4- dichlorophenol with elimination of hydrogen chloride can cause low chlorinated congeners of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins.

Occurrence

2,4-dichlorophenol is a metabolite of plant protection products such as nitrofen, 2,4- dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 2,4- dichlorophenoxypropionic.

Properties

2,4-dichlorophenol is a flammable solid which dissolves very little in water ( 4.5 g / l). Highly soluble, the substance in non-polar organic solvents ( hydrocarbons ) and oils and fats. The colorless crystals possess an odor reminiscent of phenol.

Use

2,4-dichlorophenol is used industrially for the production of pesticides ( herbicides ), such as 2,4 -dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 2,4- dichlorophenoxypropionic, moth-proofing agents for textiles and as an adjunct to antifungal agents in stockings and shoe inserts. Polyesters are made from 2,4-dichlorophenol.

Safety

2,4-dichlorophenol is combustible, wherein toxic gases such as chlorine, hydrogen chloride, phosgene and dioxins can occur. In the distillation of air presence, the mixture can react explosively. The compound is corrosive and toxic and is absorbed mainly through the skin; it is assumed that vapors are absorbed through the respiratory tract. Eyes, skin, mucous membranes and respiratory tract are stimulated to corrode. 2,4-dichlorophenol acts as many chlorinated compounds toxic to the central nervous system, the liver and kidneys. Symptoms of poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, confusion, muscle twitching, tachycardia to unconsciousness. In 1992, a wetting of about 10 % of the body surface in spite of rinsing with water and CPR within 20 minutes of the death of the person concerned.
