2,4,6 -trichlorophenol is a colorless crystalline solid with phenolartigem odor. It belongs to the group of trichlorophenols.
Properties
2,4,6 -trichlorophenol is hardly in cold water, but readily soluble in hot. The pK a value of 6.23 after 2,4,6 -trichlorophenol is more acidic than phenol ( pK a 9.99). The chlorine substituents favor the protolysis.
Occurrence
2,4,6 -trichlorophenol is an intermediate in the biological degradation of penta chlorophenol -containing fungicides. Microorganisms it set to 2,4,6- Trichloranisol leading into wine to cork taste.
Safety
The substance irritates the eyes, respiratory tract, skin and mucous membranes and may lead to disorders of the central nervous system. Many chlorophenols are well absorbed through the skin, which has been specifically verified with 2,4,6 -trichlorophenol in experiments with animals and in vitro studies with human skin. Upon heating, the substance may decompose explosively or convert highly toxic chlorine compounds such as polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans.
