256th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

The 256th Infantry Division was a military major unit of the Wehrmacht in the German Reich. The Division was also known under the name The green regiment.

The division was created as a division fourth wave formation from the complementary units of the Military District IV and one-third of the Military District XIII August 26, 1939.

The resolution on 21 July 1944, after its use in Vitebsk. In September 1944, the division was reorganized as the 256th Volks Grenadier Division. They consisted mainly of inexperienced or Volkssturm members.

Division history

The 256th Infantry Division was set up on 26 August 1939, one third of duties of Military District XIII and the supplementary units of the Military District IV as the 4th Infantry Division -up shaft. During the campaign in the west in June 1940, the division was used in Brittany, where it remained as an occupation force until February 1941. On November 20, 1940 had the 256th leave a third of its staff to the 291 ID, which has been replaced. In February 1941, the division was moved to Poland, where she also took part in the war against the Soviet Union in June and pushed forward into Soviet territory. On 11 April 1943, the Grenadier - Regiment 476 (formerly IR 476) was dissolved and later set on July 4, 1944 again. The 256th Infantry Division was disbanded on 21 July 1944, after its destruction in Vitebsk. As a substitute, the 568th Volks Grenadier Division was renamed the 256th Volks Grenadier Division, which was completed on the military training area Koenigsbrueck.
