(26 ) Proserpina is an asteroid of the main belt, which was discovered on May 5, 1853 by Karl Theodor Robert Luther at the observatory Dusseldorf.

It was named after celestial bodies Proserpina, daughter of the Roman goddess Ceres.

Proserpina moves at a distance of 2.4 ( perihelion ) to 2.9 ( aphelion ) astronomical units on an almost circular orbit around the sun. The orbit is inclined 3.6 ° to the ecliptic, the orbital eccentricity is 0.09.

Proserpina has a diameter of 95 kilometers.

Just as there was a Greek mythological Persephone corresponding to the Roman Proserpina, there is also an asteroid named Persephone.
