( 26074 ) Carl Wirtz is the orbit of Mars grazing asteroid of the main belt, by the German astronomer Hans -Emil Schuster at La Silla Observatory (IAU code 809 ) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile was discovered on October 8, 1977.

The asteroid is named after the German astronomer Carl Wilhelm Wirtz (1875-1939), the expansion of the universe with the help of the radial velocities of the galaxies first - but purely qualitative - proved.
