26th Division (German Empire)

The 26th Division (1st Royal Württemberg ) was a major unit of the Württemberg Army in the composite army of the German Empire.

History

Name

Already on 31 March 1817 ( Foundation Day ) was in the Kingdom of Württemberg established a 1st Infantry Division. It was summarized on July 27, 1848 the former 2nd Infantry Division to an infantry division. At that included all the infantry regiments of the Württemberg army and was divided into three brigades. On May 11, 1868 this division was disbanded and the commando brigades directly to the corps command.

On 18 December 1871, the 26th Division (1st Royal Württemberg ) was rebuilt, but without division headquarters. This was set up only on 4 March 1872.

The Division command stood from 1817 until the dissolution in 1919 in Stuttgart.

Of Battle 1914-1917

The 26th Cavalry Brigade (1st Royal Württemberg ) came after the mobilization in 1914 the 7th Cavalry Division. The division remained in the XIII. Army Corps.

From 1 December 1914, 26 ( Württ. ) Infantry Division and the 25th Reserve Division was formed ( transients with Field Artillery Regiment " King Charles " (1 Württembergisches ) No. 13, previously 27 Division ) the " XIII. Corps Fabeck " at the 9th Army ( Mackensen ) in Poland. In March 1915, the XIII. Corps of the 12th Army ( Gallwitz ), on November 1, 1915 the XXII. Reserve Corps ( Falkenhayn ), 3 k.u.k. Army ( Kövess ) assumed.

Outline 1915 In May 1915, the 52nd Infantry Brigade was disbanded, the Fusilier Regiment No. 122 came to the 209th Infantry Brigade of the newly formed 105th Division, the Infantry Regiment No. 121 to the remaining 51st Infantry Brigade.

Of Battle 1917

In winter 1916/1917 entered a new struggle regulation " principles for leadership in the defensive battle " with a new general structure of a division into force [A 1]. The division was divided in December 1917 in

As of October 7, 1917, the division was with the 200th ( preuß. ) Hunter Division for General Command Special Duty ( special use ) 51 in Veneto.

As of March 1918, the division was again placed under the command group XIII at the 2nd Army.
