(296) Phaetusa is an asteroid of the inner main asteroid belt, which was discovered on 19 August 1890 by Auguste Charlois at Nice Observatory.

It was named after celestial bodies Phaetusa, one of Heliden called daughters of the sun god Helios in Greek mythology.

Phaetusa moves at a distance of 1.8715 ( perihelion ) to 2.5858 ( aphelion ) astronomical units in 3.3272 years of the sun. The orbit is inclined 1.7467 ° to the ecliptic, the orbital eccentricity is 0.1603.

Details of the physical properties, such as size, albedo and rotation period are not known.
