( 2976 ) Lautaro is an asteroid of the outer main belt, which was discovered by the Chilean astronomers Carlos Torres on April 22, 1974 at the Observatorio Cerro El Roble (IAU code 805). Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid it had previously been several: 27 October 1903 the provisional designation A903 UG at the Heidelberg State Observatory king chair, on 2 December 1953 ( 1953 XA) at the Observatoire Royal de Belgique in Uccle, on July 2, 1957 (1957 NB) in the Argentinian Astronómico Observatorio de la Plata, on 1 December 1965 ( 1965 XA) at the Goethe Link Observatory, Indiana, and on December 30, 1972 ( 1972 YP1 ) at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj.

The asteroid belongs to the Cybele group, a family of asteroids beyond the Hecuba gap, which forms the outer boundary of the middle main belt. The orbits of the members are in 7:4 resonance to the planet Jupiter, which they are stabilized. The group was named after the asteroid (65 ) Cybele. ( 2976 ) has a dark surface Lautaro with an albedo of 0.0522 (± 0.007 ) and a mean diameter of 38.42 ( ± 2.3 ) kilometers.

The asteroid rotates in 17.41 (± 0.08 ) hours to themselves and thus has a slow rotation speed. The light curve analysis to determine the rotation period was carried out from 1 to 3 September 2007 and Oakley Observatory in Terre Haute, Indiana with a 35 -inch Celestron telescope.

( 2976 ) Lautaro was born on March 26, 1986 named after Lautaro ( in Mapudungun Leftaru ), a Warchief ( Toqui ) of the Mapuche in the Arauco War in Chile in the 16th century.
